I don't mind earthquakes.
Shoot I moved to Silicon Valley 5 months after the Loma Prieta earthquake so no worries here.
What I do mind about earthquakes is being woken up at 4.35am with a 7.1 earthquake and then the following morning at 5.20am with a 5.2 earthquake. I'm not good at going back to sleep once I'm awake and boy do earthquakes wake you up.
I'm also not fond of broken china and glass in the dark.
I don't mind not having power but I don't like not have information.
Thanks to Dae I got an idea of what was going on.
We had no idea the Rolleston sewerage plant was knocked of it's foundations or
Kaiapoi and Darfield townships were a huge mess or
that roads were upheaved or
Christchurch's older (and some not very old at all) brick buildings had collapsed or
Halswell had raw sewerage bubbling (yuk! imagine that) up out of the earth or
Prebbleton had grown sandhills that spewed fresh water from new springs or
rotary milking platforms had come off their bases.
Yes I did have a radio but they had very little information and the little that they did was so dramatic that I knew it couldn't be the conservative Canterbury I know.
It wasn't as dramatic as the news made out.
The number of cars out rubbernecking was considerable, it's no wonder that the police have closed off central Christchurch (aside from the fallen walls, outbreaks of fire and a spot of looting).
The worst thing about a civil defense emergency is the boredom.
So let's see...
Friday I was driving back to the office from North Canterbury (scary, yukky place) and got caught out in a surprise snowstorm that cracked my windscreen further,
Saturday 7.1 earthquake blah blah
Sunday 5.2 earthquake and my lamb Poppy died today too.
Can't wait to see what tomorrow has instore.
I'm so sorry about Poppy, on top of everything else I'm sure you didn't need that as well. xx
