dead animals

really at morning tea this morning we had a very gross non-townie conversation.

I forget what a townie I am
and forget how close to death farming is.

I mean I know the way animals become meat is to slaughter them
but it's the random deaths that are bizarre.

To here are a few of today's choice stories.

Richie was driving his family home along a dirt road.
As they came to a stop at an intersection
a little owl flew from the roadside bushes
into the grill of their car.
It bounced up onto the bonnet,
the owl rolled up to the windscreen
and lay facing inward
staring it's dead stare at Richie, his wife and three little kids
as they sat at the stop sign
staring back.
Nice Richie, very nice.

After that story I added mine of hitting a pheasant
stopping and taking to my friend's place in case they wanted to eat it.
They aren't even hillbillies.

Then Nic chimed with stories of centre pivots
rolling over cows and squishing them.
What happens is that the pivot has huge tires
that roll forward regardless what is in front of them.

As the wheel moves, it pins the cow to the ground,
keep in mind these babies are not fast at getting up
and then pop! goes the cow.

And then with sheep, try this story.
Richie's farm has recently been part of an irrigation scheme.
Last summer huge pipes were put underground across his farm.
The pipes sat for about two months before they were layed.
Sheep wander, they wander a lot.
They wander inside the pipes and cause they are thick
they get stuck.
That's thick waisted as much as mentally thick.
Of course nobody knows this
and the pipes get laid,
underground
across many farms
so the water can be piped everywhere it needs to be.

When it's time for the water to be turned on
they always give the pipes a good flush first.
Yup you guessed it.
Very dead sheep shoot out of any open vent,
squeezes out like a sausage maker.
Super gagging material that is.

Then Nic,
(she has all the good stories)
with finding dead sheep squeezed into roadside hedges,
where they have gone to shelter from storms
and squeezed and squeezed themselves into those huge shelter belts
until they are well and truly stuck,
where they die.
Then when it comes time to trim the hedge
with these very cool machines
they find dead sheep in the bushes.

Aren't you glad there are no photos tonight???
